Desmond Doss

This piece aims to musically depict the military career of Pfc. Desmond Doss, a war hero in many regards. Although the introduction and main theme may not sound like anything military, it speaks to the peaceful nature that Desmond Doss had. He had no intentions to use or even hold a gun, and despite being taunted for his principles (hence the na-na-na-boo-boo melody), he was never in conflict with anyone. He felt that enlisting in World War II was what God called him to do, and he used that calling to serve as a noncombatant medic. As the piece progresses, each phase of Doss’s career takes shape: his enlistment, his training, and being in the midst of war at Hacksaw Ridge, all intertwined with this peaceful theme in a rondo-like form
(ABACADA). His achievement of dragging 75 wounded men to safety comes near the end of the war theme with a melody that syllabifies his repeated prayer: “Please let me get one more”. The opening theme follows one last time to celebrate him as a hero.
